Naming Gallery’s project, Water from Blood, funded by Southern Exposure, will send Bay Area Puerto Rican artist Choke and “Diasporican” artist Jacki Tobia back to their country of origin to install 100 collapsible rainwater harvesting barrels in Vieques, Puerto Rico.

During this trip to Puerto Rico, Naming Gallery will interview members of Puerto Rican based relief organizations in order to inform American audiences about the current situation. The fundraiser and art auction to be held at Naming Gallery will be informed by these discussions. We intend to bring current stories and developments to the audience we have in Oakland.

By forging this connection we will restore a dialog between artists in Puerto Rico-based relief organizations and Oakland artists of Puerto Rican descent. Water from Blood will culminate in a free public showing of our documentary and installation based exhibition at Naming Gallery in July of 2018.
